Ale sales to support reforestation

The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, a Hawaii Island nonprofit organization, in partnership with Kona Brewing Co., has created a limited-edition release of a new beer, the Makani Wheat Ale.

The ale, which will be available on draft at locations throughout Hawaii from November through January, features koa blossom honey from a harvest earlier this year at the historic Hawaiian Legacy forest. Makani Wheat caps off the four-part Makana Series launched by Kona Brewing Co. in January. Each of the beers incorporates distinctive ingredients from throughout the state.

Makana means to give in the Hawaiian language. A portion of proceeds from the series will go to Hawaii nonprofit organizations representing the inspiration for each beer: Earth (aina), fire (wela), water (kai) and wind (makani). Makani Wheat Ale donations will support reforestation of endemic trees such as koa and Hawaiian sandalwood by the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative.

Interim car rental facility opens at HNL

An interim car rental facility is slated to open Wednesday at the Honolulu International Airport.

The facility, located on the eastern half of the overseas parking structure, will consolidate the five existing car rental companies on the airport premises into one location. The facility will house Advantage, Avis, Budget, Hertz and National car rental companies. It will also feature a new car wash, fueling stations, customer service building and car pick-up and return areas. The building is a short walk across the street from the overseas terminal and baggage claim area. Busing between the airport and car rental facility will be provided.

The $30.9 million project began in February 2014. The project is funded by a Customer Facility Charge which consists of a daily charge of $4.50 for all rental cars.

Car rental companies will operate from the interim facility while the permanent consolidated rental car facility, a major component of the Hawaii Airports Modernization Program, is built to the east of the overseas parking structure where the current rental car companies are located. It is expected to open in late 2020.
